Cervical insufficiencies affect 1-2% of pregnancies in the United States. Cervical changes account for approximately 25% of second trimester miscarriages. Cervical insufficiency is caused by damage or trauma to the cervix during a D&C, surgery, traumatic deliveries, malformation, or exposure to DES. For many women the cause is unknown. Pregnant women with cervical problems may not be diagnosed until the second trimester or after a loss has occurred. Most times, it is an incidental finding during an ultrasound or internal exam.
Having cervical insufficiency is a devastating diagnosis. In these cases, most women have experienced multiple losses or given birth to a very premature baby. The mother then may experience a horrifying NICU experience or grieve the loss of a child or children. She may also deal with crushed dreams of having a baby, and a lonely quiet journey.
I too have been diagnosed with cervical insufficiency for reasons that are unknown. My husband and I have suffered from two losses of precious babies, Carissa Elizabeth (Nov. 2010) and Christian Louis (May 2012). Unfortunately, I was not a candidate for a cerclage, and left devastated over losing my children. I know what it feels like to feel inadequate, forgotten, forsaken, ashamed, and embarrassed, and wishing someone would send some sort of token of care. However, people that you thought were in your corner have turned their backs. I have been negatively talked about, I have been in the presence of insensitivity, lack of care and concern, and humiliated in front of an audience. Nevertheless, I still have faith and hope although facing walls of impossibility. God has centered around me a band of love, a supportive husband, family, and friends.
If you have a story like mine or suffered from miscarriages, stillbirth, or SIDS, be encouraged God still has a plan for you. You do not have to walk on this road alone. In the mist of your deepest despair and sorrow, search within for the perfect strength of God and his ministering angels. He has your heart and is eager to mend it. Fathers of these beautiful children, be encouraged and embrace the healing properties of God.
God Bless
